From 1 January 2026, Spanish traffic law will introduce an important change to how drivers signal emergencies on the road. Under the new regulation, traditional warning triangles will be replaced by the V-16 hazard warning light, an orange flashing beacon that must be carried in your vehicle. This new device is designed to improve road safety by making breakdowns and accidents more visible while allowing drivers to stay safely inside their cars.
If you want to avoid fines and stay protected on the road, keeping up to date with these changes is essential. Below, we explain what the V-16 device is, how it works, and what you need to know before it becomes mandatory.

What is the V-16 device?
The V-16 is a small, portable orange warning light similar to those used by emergency services. When activated, it emits a flashing orange light and, if approved, connects to the DGT 3.0 traffic system. Its function is the same as warning triangles: to warn other drivers that a vehicle has broken down or been involved in an accident — but in a much safer way, as you don’t need to leave the car to use it.
V-16 lights vs. warning triangles
V-16 emergency lights offer several advantages over traditional warning triangles:
High-intensity flashing light visible in all directions (360º)
Operates for at least 30 minutes
Battery-powered or rechargeable, with a minimum lifespan of 18 months
Can be placed on the car roof without stepping onto the road
More visible in rain, fog, snow and low-light conditions
When does the V-16 become mandatory?
From 1 January 2026, the law will require drivers to carry a V-16 emergency light connected to the DGT 3.0 system. Warning triangles will no longer be accepted. The device should be kept in the glove compartment and must have sufficient battery power.
What features must an approved V-16 have?
To comply with the law, a V-16 device must:
Emit a flashing orange light visible from at least 1 km
Work independently for a minimum of 30 minutes
Be resistant to rain, wind and other weather conditions
Connect automatically to the DGT 3.0 platform to share the vehicle’s location
Be easy to place securely on the vehicle roof
Why the V-16 light is safer
The new law aims to reduce accidents caused by drivers leaving their vehicles to place warning triangles. The main benefits of the V-16 include:
Improved safety: No need to exit the vehicle
Greater visibility: Easily seen from long distances
Automatic location sharing: Faster assistance through DGT 3.0
Quick and simple use: Place, switch on, and stay inside
How to choose the right V-16 light and avoid fines
Not all V-16 lights on the market meet legal requirements. To avoid fines, make sure the model you purchase appears on the official DGT list of approved devices. https://www.dgt.es/muevete-con-seguridad/tecnologia-e-innovacion-en-carretera/Dispositivos-de-presenalizacion-V16/
Approved V-16 lights are designed only for emergency signalling and location sharing and must not include additional functions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still use warning triangles?
Yes, but only until 1 January 2026. After that date, only DGT-connected V-16 lights will be legally accepted.
How do I use a V-16 in an emergency?
Place it on the roof of your car without exiting the vehicle and turn it on. If it’s an approved model, it will automatically send your location to the DGT.
Do V-16 lights need maintenance?
Simply check the battery regularly and keep it charged if rechargeable.
By switching to a V-16 emergency light ahead of the deadline, you’ll stay safe, avoid fines, and be fully prepared for the new law. Stay safe and compliant on the road. 🚦
